Outlook Express 5 & 6 - Check Email Settings

SMTP Auth and SSL

Chief Internet email may also be configured for SMTP Authentication and SSL encryption for outgoing email. Please note that SMTP Auth and SSL are optional and are not required to use Chief Internet email.

For further information and setup instructions, see the links below. NOTE: Please configure SMTP Auth or SSL after first configuring your email program for your Chief Internet email.

  • SMTP Authentication
  • SSL Encryption (outgoing)
  • SSL Encryption (incoming)
  • Return to Outlook Express 5 & 6 main configuration page
Return to main Mail & News page

    1. Open Outlook Express.

    2. Click Tools on the menu and select Accounts.

    3. Click on the Mail tab.
    4. Click once on your email account in the window to select it and click the Properties button.

    5. On the General tab, the name of the account is shown at the top which is used to identify the account. This is generally "mail. Chief Internet.net". The Name field contains the "Display Name" - the name that is seen by email recipients in the "From:" field.

Check the E-mail address: field, making sure your email address is complete, is spelled correctly and does not contain any spaces or commas. Note: You do not need to type an email address into the "Reply address:" field unless you would like people to reply to an email address other than the one you specified in the "E-mail address:" field.

    6. Click the Servers tab. Both the Incoming mail: and Outgoing mail: should be mail. Chief Internet.net unless you have an account with us that requires another mailserver. Click here for the list of Chief Internet Mail Servers.

The Account name: field should contain your email username or Chief Internet email address in the format of username@ Chief Internet.net in lowercase letters. Type your email password into the Password: field in lowercase letters.

For security reasons, the characters appear as asterisks (*) in the Password: field. If you suspect that the password was entered incorrectly (misspelled or was typed in CAPS), remove the asterisks and retype the password.

    7. Click the Connection tab. Place a check in "Always connect to this account using:" unless you have more than one Internet account.
      1. If you use a modem to connect, select the " Chief Internet" dial-up connection from the drop-down menu (you may have given it a different name).
      2. If you use DSL or cable to connect to Chief Internet, select "Local Area Network" from the drop-down menu.

    8. Click Apply then OK.
    9. Click OK again to close the accounts window.
    10. Test your email account configuration by sending a message to yourself.
