Spam (Junk Email)

How does the filter determine what is and what is not spam?

Many Spammers use the same tricks to change the headers of an email to make it more difficult to track. They also use a similar style within the message itself, certain phrases, no text within the message, or even writing the whole message all in CAPITAL LETTERS. When it is activated, Chief Internet's Spam Filter tests each email you receive for these tricks and styles. The messages are also compared to existing databases with information of known spammers and networks that spam originates from.

Each test item that is found in the email assigns a specific amount of points to the message. If the total score for the message is greater than 8.0, the message is flagged as Spam and moved to the Spam folder. When you view a message in your Spam folder, you will see that the spam cores have been added to the beginning of the message. It will look similar to this:

SPAM: -------------- Possible Spam Detected ----------------
SPAM: Your Chief Internet Spam Filter has detected that this message
SPAM: is a possible spam. This message has been sidelined to
SPAM: your "Spam" folder and will be deleted automatically
SPAM: after 5 days. For more information, please refer to
SPAM: http://www. Chief Internet.net/spamfilter/.
SPAM:
SPAM: Content analysis details: (12.6 hits, 8 required)
SPAM: Hit! (2.0 points) Subject is all capitals
SPAM: Hit! (1.3 points) From: ends in numbers
SPAM: Hit! (1.6 points) BODY: HTML mail with non-white background
SPAM: Hit! (4.5 points) HTML-only mail, with no text version
SPAM: Hit! (3.2 points) Subject is full of 8-bit characters
SPAM:
SPAM: --------------- Possible Spam Detected ---------------

From the information above, you'll notice that the email this came from scored 12.6. Listed below the total score, are all the tests that produced hits in this email, as well as the point values assigned to those tests. There are hundreds of different tests with different points. Some tests can even add negative (-) points to the score.

A message that scores less than 8.0 will be delivered to your Inbox unaltered.

How do I use webmail with my Spam folder?

To use webmail to check your Spam folder, go to http://mail. Chief Internet.net. Enter your username and password to log in. On the left site of the screen you should see the Folder list containing the Inbox and the Spam folder. Click the Spam folder to view the contents. From there you can choose to view, delete or move the messages.

To view the message, just click the subject to open a message.

To delete messages, click the check box next to the message and click the Delete button to remove the message.

To move messages to your Inbox, click the check box next to the message choose the Inbox from the Move Selected to box and click the Move button.

To see if there are any messages in your Spam folder without opening it first, you will need to change some options. Click the Option link near the top of the page, then choose Folder Options. In the Folder List Options section, change Enable Unread Message Notification to All Folders and click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. Once this option is set, the number of unread messages will be displayed in the Folder List next to each folder name.

If you do not see the Spam folder in the Folder list, it may not be subscribed. To subscribe to the Spam folder, click the Folders link near the top of the page and scroll down to the Subscribe/Unsubscribe section. If Spam is listed in the right box (above the Subscribe button), highlight it and click Subscribe. The Spam folder should now appear in the Folder list when you refresh. If Subscribe is listed in the left box (above the Unsubscribe button) then the folder is already subscribed, click the Refresh Folder link in the Folder List to view it. If the Spam folder is not listed in either box, you may not have the Spam filter activated. Click here for instructions to activate your Spam Filter.

What can I do if legitimate mail is being filtered?

Unfortunately, it is always possible that a legitimate email may be filtered as spam. Because of this possibility, you should check your Spam folder at least once every 5 days. All you need to do is move the message from you Spam folder to your Inbox for it to be delivered normally.

If you find that messages from the same person or mailing list are always ending up in your Spam folder, you can adjust the sensitivity of the Spam Filter or add email addresses and domains to your Allow / Deny list through webmail. Click here for instructions to adjust your Spam Filter settings.

What can I do if not enough spam is filtered?

Too many spam messages still making it to your mailbox? Through webmail, you can set your Spam filter to a higher sensitivity setting to filter more messages before they arrive in your inbox.

You can also block email addresses or entire domains using the Allow / Deny list in the Spam Filter options as well. Click here for instructions to adjust your Spam Filter settings.

What if I have problems with the Spam Filter?

If you continue to have problems with the Spam Filter, please contact us by opening a case on my Chief Internet.
